Kaleton Internet conducts research into
networking and computer security issues. Currently, we do not publish much of our work as it is performed simply to increase our knowledge and allow us to provide better services. However when papers, articles and instructional guides result from our work they are published below.
Combination of
Misuse and Anomaly Network Intrusion Detection Systems -
This project was completed in March 2002 during time studying at the University of York's Department of Computer Science. Intrusion Detection Systems detect attackers and respond to them in real time. This paper investigates combining two different approaches to intrusion detection in
one system. Misuse detection consists of defining malicious network traffic and monitoring for it. Anomaly detection
consists of defining normal or typical network traffic and then detecting anything else. The PERL source code for a
prototype NIDS is included (requires TCPDump).
Choosing a Secure Password -
This very short guide was written in February 2004 to educate users of the Kaleton email and FTP services about good password practices. The principles covered equally apply to all circumstances when a password is required, such as when generating encryption keys.
Computer Security for the Home User -
This guide is aimed at the home PC user and covers the basics of securing a computer from the threats that exist when using the Internet. It was written in September 2005.
The Continuing Threat of Large Scale Physical Attacks being Launched from the Internet - This work, published in December 2005, is a proof-of-concept script for a novel form of attack that was written about by researchers from Johns Hopkins University and AT&T Labs. Ways of preventing the attack are discussed.
